Advancing women’s health in midlife and menopause

Two APA reports on how care and research can better meet women’s needs during this stage of life

Midlife, including the menopause transition, is a time of significant biological, psychological, and social change. It affects roughly half the population, and women may spend up to half their lives in their peri- and postmenopausal years. Yet their needs during this period often go underrecognized by scientific and clinical communities, and many navigate challenging symptoms without the guidance or support they deserve.

Two complementary APA reports, developed by experts from across the country, aim to help close the gaps in care and research.

The first outlines practical steps toward care that is comprehensive, evidence-informed, culturally tailored, and trauma-informed, including expanded access, integrated care, and stronger provider training. The second summarizes what we know about mental health during midlife and menopause and identifies where more research is most needed, from the range of conditions the transition may affect to the social and workplace factors that shape women’s experiences.

Together, the reports acknowledge the real challenges of this life stage while also recognizing its strengths, including resilience and growth. They offer a practical roadmap for clinicians, researchers, and advocates working to ensure women are better supported through midlife and beyond.
